Judiciary Office Supervisors, Secretaries Tipped On How to Improve Performance
Participants at the refresher training for office supervisors and Secretaries

On Wednesday February23, 2022, the Judicial Training Institute together with the Judiciary Human Resource Department held a one-day refresher training for office supervisors and Secretaries from the western and eastern region. The workshop took place at the Institute's premises in Nakawa with at least 73 participants taking part. 

HW Nassuna Flavia Matovu, the Inspector of Courts, stressed the need for all-round discipline and proper ethical conduct whether at work or at home, "discipline is paramount and we want all-round discipline. The Judiciary today is an attractive employer and people are struggling to join, we are only advising you to appreciate your jobs," she said. 

The training was meant to instruct the cadre on how to better manage and improve performance in court operations.

HW Emokor Samuel, the Registrar High Court, during his presentation on 'the relationship between Judicial and Non-Judicial Officers' called for professionalism at the workplace. "It is imperative that you (participants) are professional in the way you do your work and that there is mutual respect. Know your boundaries in as far your work is concerned," said. 

Similarly, the Commissioner Human Resource Management, Mrs Apophia N. Tumwine, advised that since the participants are office managers, they should learn to deal with people and diligently serve. "You are our ambassadors down there be in charge," she said. 

Adding, "have a positive attitude, dream big, together we shall change the judiciary and with the right attitude we are destined for success." 

The Registrar JTI, HW Mary Kisakye Kaitesi, reiterated the need for participants to share the new knowledge with others at their stations. 

On the issue of job promotions, Ms. Susan Harriet Akello, the Principal Human Resource Officer, clarified that these are only carried out when there is a vacancy and the applicants meet the qualifications to get promoted. She equally clarified that after a period of three years at a station, one is eligible for transfer. Adding that factors such as service delivery and needs assessment also inform transfers.  

The other subjects dealt with the workshop program were; the Terms and Conditions of Service, Development of a Typical Performance Plan for Secretaries and Office Supervisors, Performance Management, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation. The lead facilitator was Mr. Ronnie Mbabali, from the Civil Service College.
